چکیده

Social insects communicate by using chemical, visual, tactile, and acoustic signals, including stridulations. Ectatomma ruidum is a mainly Neotropical ant species complex that has faced strong divergence at the genetic level; have highly variable blend of cuticular hydrocarbons relatively conserved morphology. Based on evidence for chemical differentiation, we tested variation in traits. We compared stridulations produced E. sp. 2, 3–4 new putative 5, as well morphology stridulatory file. found 5 were statistically different from those other number The differences traits might rely more way ants produce sound (rubbed area percentages) than file, which did not find variation. Our results highlight use potential taxonomic tools integrative studies suggest been subjected to selection.

Spatio-temporal learning by the ant ectatomma ruidum

We tested, under field and laboratory conditions, whether the neotropical ant Ectatomma ruidum Roger can learn several associations between temporal and spatial changes in the daily pattern of food availability. Honey was shuffled between two or three feeding sites following a fixed daily schedule. Foragers learnt to associate particular sites with the specific times at which food was available...

A new species of Stigmatomma from Taiwan (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Amblyoponinae)

Stigmatomma is the most speciose ant genus in the subfamily Amblyoponinae. In the present paper, the worker caste of a new species is described, S. luyiaesp. n., which was collected from a soil sample in a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in Taiwan. An identification key to the females of Stigmatomma species with 11 antennomeres occurring in Asia is also provided.

A new species of Asphinctopone (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Ponerinae) from Tanzania

Asphinctopone is a rarely encountered genus of ponerine ants, previously known only from the wet forest zones of West and central Africa. In the most recent revision of the genus Bolton & Fisher synonymised the three previously described species under A. sylvestrii Santschi and described one new but very closely related species, A. differens Bolton & Fisher. A very distinctive new species, Asph...

Cuticular Hydrocarbons of Kapala sulcifacies (Hymenoptera: Eucharitidae) and Its Host, the Ponerine Ant Ectatomma ruidum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Cuticular hydrocarbons from the ponerine ant Ectatomma ruidum Roger and a highly integrated eucharitid myrmecophile, Kapala sulcifacies (Cameron), associated with it, have been characterized. Ninety hydrocarbons were identiÞed from the ant, 55 hydrocarbons from the female wasp and 54 hydrocarbons from the male wasp. The wasps and ants share 40 hydrocarbons. These shared 40 hydrocarbons represen...

Socially-parasitic Myrmica species (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) of Himalaya, with the description of a new species

A new socially-parasitic species, Myrmica latra sp. n. is described based on a queen and male from Indian Himalaya. Its queen differs from other species by the distinctly narrower petiole and postpetiole, blunt and non-divergent propodeal spines, and a darker body colour. The taxonomic position of the three known Himalayan socially-parasitic Myrmica species is discussed, and Myrmica ereptrix Bo...
